You’ve seen them everywhere, those signs that basically say, “We’re short staffed, please be nice to our employees.” You see them in restaurants, hotels, and even hospitals.
I’m not here to get into the politics of why employers are struggling to hire, whether you think it’s because of the unemployment stimulus payments, or because employers need to start offering living wages, or because people can’t find child care.
Instead, this is about how mean people have become, how entitled, how impatient. Everyone has heard the stories about how someone lost their shit because the vinaigrette came on the salad instead…
We’re often told to take time to stop and smell the flowers. You just won’t be doing it at my place.
It’s because they call me the plant killer.
My friends say I’m so bad at taking care of plants that I even kill the plastic ones. No one, and I mean no one, ever asks me to water their plants when they go on vacation. Nurseries have sued me, and sometimes they issue a restraining order just to make sure there are no plants in my house and that I never show up to buy any. …
Sometimes you run across a senior who knows how to use technology. They’re a whiz with their iPhone, their computer, and any other devices they own. But admit it, when you come across one of these older folks, your response is usually astonishment, right?
Because it seems so rare.
You’re used to the opposite. You’ve tried to get grandma and grandpa to text, but they seem to be completely bewildered by the process.
Maybe if you understood the reasons why your grandparents are struggling with this, perhaps you would be a little more patient.
And that’s reason number one: patience.
You may be wearing your headphones more now than ever. Maybe you’re trying to drown out someone you’re stuck at home with, or it’s how you listen to your video calls. But over time they get downright disgusting.
Some people naturally produce copious amounts of ear wax.
Chances are that if you do, someone has told you. And most women believe men produce far more than they do. Is this true? Maybe it just seems that way because men seem less likely to clean their ears (just ask any woman).
How many times have you been asked by a woman…
Like everyone else, I have to start this post by stating that I’m not a health professional. And there are already some excellent articles on why this current situation should be taken seriously. Like this one from Dave Troy: Commonly Asked Questions About Covid-19.
I live in earthquake country in California.
Some of these ideas come from the earthquake kits we’re always asked to have ready. But unlike earthquake kits, there are a few things you probably don’t need.
For example, water and masks.
Are these things really necessary?
It’s not unreasonable to believe the lights will stay on and…
despite Apple’s attempts to eliminate them with their pre-order system. People once more gathered in front of the shiny glass buildings in the hope to snag the few phones that were not already claimed.
Is it so we can have a moment of feeling special?
Does this go back to our explorer days, becoming the first to discover something?
Is it to give us a moment where we feel we are better than everyone else?
Could the need to have the newest, shiniest toy be a way to alleviate boredom?
Think about it. Are you sick of your current phone…
Think about it. Why are affairs fun? Because they help you escape the tedium of your day to day life. They let you dream of a better or at least a different life. Your secret partner is on their best behavior, there’s no fights, there’s no drama. Everything feels easy and exciting.
Did you not feel the same way? How many vacations have you been on where you said to yourself, “I could run away and live here,” even though you didn’t know anything about what it really takes to get through a day there?
Think about how you feel…
As I approach my 58th birthday, I realize I’ve learned a lot of life lessons. Most of them seem like common sense, yet some are hard earned.
5 minutes a day equals 30 hours a year. 15 minutes equals 90 hours. What can you accomplish in 90 hours? And many times, those few minutes will turn into more as you get into a rhythm.
Take a lesson or a class. Choose a how-to video on YouTube. Do a chapter in a how-to book. Sign up for an online course. Move out of your comfort zone a little.
It’s how you…
I last saw him 25 years ago in a Thanksgiving show with The Pointer Sisters. At the time, it was one of the best shows I had ever seen, to the point I told people for years he was in my Top 5. Keep in mind, I was on the radio for 30 years and during that time I saw thousands of concerts, so when I say he was one of the best, that’s saying something.
However, there’s something about seeing an artist from my past that is a reminder about how I feel about relationships and how they change…
I just saw this quote in People magazine:
“Learn to code. It’s a skill that everyone should learn at some point-but sadly I don’t know how to do it.” Katie Couric
Why did she say this? She expresses regret yet not knowing how to code hasn’t seemed to hinder her career at all. So why has she added her voice to the crowd pushing our kids to learn coding?
There is a push by many school districts to teach kids how to code. There is also a national organization dedicated to teaching this to children. Also, Apple offers free beginning…
