I respectfully disagree with your characterization. People (women AND men) have the same choices.

As far as 'giving up' is concerned, I feel it is a valid way to express when people put great effort into a marriage before choosing to stop. Of course, it's not the only way to express it, but I don't agree it's ridiculous.
